Exposing Fake Academics & Their Foreign Backers

Compromised, foreign-funded propagandists shame, undermine, and endanger real academia. 

The May 22, 2014 Thai military coup that ousted the regime of convicted criminal, fugitive, accused mass murderer billionaire Thaksin Shinawatra has "shaken the tree," dislodging and exposing many aspects of his deep network of foreign-funded subversion laid down over the years to aid in his efforts to undermine and upturn Thailand's traditional institutions and political order.

Among these include a massive, heavily armed terrorist wing that had positioned weapon caches across the country for a planned "civil war." Another network includes a foreign-funded network of faux-academics, hiding behind their titles, credentials, and professorships to peddle pro-Thaksin, pro-globalization propaganda aimed at undermining Thailand's indigenous institutions and replacing them with foreign, corporate-financier funded NGOs. 

Already covered in depth are Washington's collection of National Endowment for Democracy (NED) funded NGOs including most predominantly Prachatai, ENLAWTHAI Foundation, The Foundation for Community Educational Media, and the Human Rights Lawyers Association - all of which have been actively opposing the coup and any attempts to dismantle Shinawatra's political machine. The Bangkok Post in its article, "Anti-coup rally on streets, social media," reported:

The Human Rights Lawyers Association, Cross Cultural Foundation, Union of Civil Liberties and the Enlawthai Foundation have also called for the return to a civilian democratic regime and for the military to go back to the barracks.

This is an almost verbatim repeat of the US State Department's official statement condemning the coup and demanding immediate elections that would once again return Shinawatra to power and illustrates the role these NGOs serve - an echo chamber that translates US State Department talking points into the local language of choice - in this case Thai.

Prachatai alone receives millions of baht in foreign funding a year, a fact made known only as recently as 2011 after calls for transparency eventually resulted in a partial disclosure. Prachatai's funding was made available only up to and including the 2011-2012 fiscal year, and only in English. Prachatai's Thai readers to this day are asked for donations without knowing the organization is funded millions of baht a year, while English readers are left in the dark regarding Prachatai's current funding. The National Endowment for Democracy's official website still lists Prachatai as a current recipient of funding.

Keeping this in mind is essential in understanding the role these fraudulent, opaque NGOs play as an interface between foreign interests and Thailand's growing faux, foreign-funded academic community.

Chiang Mai - Former Epicenter of Shinawatra's Political Power 



Beginning in northern Thailand, the alleged epicenter of Thaksin Shinawatra's political influence, home to hismurderous "Rak Chiang Mai 51" "red shirt" street mob, is Chiang Mai University (CMU). CMU, like all of Thailand's academic institutions, indeed hosts a wide variety of skilled, professional, and truly academic scholars. 

But as Shianwatra's network of subversion rotted Thailand inside and out, the university found itself the unfortunate host for those like assistant professor Pinkaew Laungaramsri. Pinkaew regularly "studies" Shinawatra's "red shirt" movement and goes on at length during "seminars" expounding the merits of their "pro-democracy" agenda. She would even stop at one point during a seminar to explain how she in particular, personally liked a "red shirt" because he at one point had been a supporter of Thailand's revered monarchy but had since switched sides.

Her inability to remain impartial, professional, or in anyway academic through her poorly disguised political agenda is not her only conflict of interest. She maintains what she calls a "bookstore" that is funded by USAID and convicted financial criminal George Soros' Open Society Foundation. A bookstore - being an establishment that generally makes money by selling books - that is funded by not one, but two foreign government organizations, raises suspicions that her bookstore, "Book Re:public" is in fact a front.

In the immediate aftermath of the coup, Pinkaew was clearly worried. She wrote to colleagues that:

I have written to several donors who fund activities of Book Re:public (USAID and OSF) to see if they can do anything to help out in this situation. Although it might not have much impact since the military seems to don't care to listen to anyone, we still hope that international pressure would at least help make it difficult for the military junta to continue their aggressive treatment towards people.

By "people," Pinkaew means those aiding and abetting Shinawatra. After supporting Shinawatra and his network, even participating in "red shirt" protests against the coup, Pinkaew went on to call for foreign governments to "pressure" the military - and she did so by contacting the foreign institutions that kept her activities in business. Calling on foreign governments to "pressure" your nation is by definition treason. Pinkaew's doing so in defense of the ousted regime of Thaksin Shinawatra is all the more troublesome - since she poses as an advocate of "democracy" and "human rights" when under Shinawatra neither existed.

Nitirat - A Cancer Within Thai Academia 

Thammasat is one of Thailand's premier universities. Its alumni can be seen making a positive impact in Thai society across a wide range of fields. However, a recent organization calling itself "Nitirat" or the "Enlightened Jurists" have tainted Thammasat's reputation and have turned the university into a spectacle of transparent, politically motivated lobbying dressed as "academia."

While the organizations claims to be impartial, apolitical, aimed at defending "democracy" and fighting what it calls "draconian Lese Majeste" laws, during one of its first meetings the auditorium was filled literally with Thaksin Shinawatra's red shirts. And in the front row, Thaksin Shinawatra's paid-corporate lobbyist, Robert Amsterdam of Amsterdam & Partners, sat, overseeing the proceedings. Far from an actual academic seminar, it was instead an attempt to re-brand Shinawatra's "red shirt" movement, perceived even abroad as uneducated, prone to violence, and more of a cult of personality built around the Shinawatra family than a "pro-democracy" movement.

Nitirat was supposed to put a "liberal" and "progressive" spin on the movement, but failed. It was a transparent example of "academica" being used to dress up what was essentially one of Shinawatra's crass and exploitative "red shirt" rallies, only held indoors, and with a drawling law lecture in place where Shinawatra's typical program of free food and country music would normally be.

While many Thais suspected Nitirat was aligned with Shinawatra, they could never have imagined the scope of conflicting interests Nitirat was actually engaged in. Sawatree Suksri, a law lecturer from Thammasat University, and a member of "Nitirat" was recently detained by the Thai military after returning from the US after what she admits was a US Embassy "study trip" on "human rights." Her supporters, including Kan Yuenyong, founder and director of Siam Intelligence Unit, claim she was in fact on a US State Department-funded exchange program.

Sawatree also contributed to the 2013 Freedom House report - the report being leveraged yearly to undermine political order around the world the West would seek to topple and replace with client regimes. This is perhaps the most troubling conflict of interest Sawatree is involved in. Not only did she have Thaksin Shinawatra's lobbyist Robert Amsterdam sitting in the front row of her organization's meetings, but she also collaborated with Freedom House upon whose board of directors sits another of Thaksin Shinawatra's lobbyists, Kenneth Adelman. Adelman providedlobbying services for Shinawatra in 2007, shortly after the first coup aimed at toppling his political machine was executed. He did so as a lobbyist under Edelman PR (official DC lobbying registration here), and the organization he serves as a director of, Freedom House, has been regularly leveraged ever since to support Shinawatra's political machine and undermine his enemies.

Sawatree would also serve as a "witness for the defense" in a criminal case targeting US-funded Prachatai director Chiranuch Premchaiporn. At every turn Sawatree finds herself the recipient of US funding and support, or mobilizing her academic facade on the behalf of others who are.

While Sawatree and her Nitirat organization attempt to portray themselves as the keepers and arbiters of democracy and human rights in Thailand, their lack of transparency and their multiplying conflicts of interest render their message moot. They are a lobbying front dressed as academia, involved deeply with literal lobbyists registered as in the service of deposed dictator Thaksin Shinawatra. That they are working in tandem with these insidious interests undermine the very principles they are hiding their agenda behind.

Freedom House and the National Endowment for Democracy: Neither Free Nor Democratic

Eroding further both Sawatree and Pinkaew's "academic" facades is the fact that their donors and foreign collaborators are diametrically opposed in every way imaginable to the principles both women peddle their political agendas behind.

Upon NED's board of directors we find John Bohn who traded petrochemicals, was an international banker for 13 years with Wells Fargo, and is currently serving as a principal for a global advisory and consulting firm, GlobalNet Partners, which assists foreign businesses by making their "entry into the complex China market easy." Surely Bohn's ability to manipulate China's political landscape through NED's various activities both inside of China and along its peripheries constitutes an alarming conflict of interest. However, it appears "conflict of interest" is a reoccurring theme throughout both NED and Freedom House.

Bohn is joined by Rita DiMartino who worked for Council on Foreign Relations corporate member AT&T as "Vice President of Congressional Relations" as well as a member of the CFR herself. Also representing the Fortune 500 is Kenneth Duberstein, a board member of the war profiteering Boeing Company, big oil's ConocoPhillips, and the Mack-Cali Realty Corporation. Duberstein also served as a director of Fannie Mae until 2007. He too is a CFR member as are two of the companies he chairs, Boeing and ConocoPhillips.

Other notable representatives of corporate-financier interests populating NED's board of directors include:

William Galston: Brookings Institution (board of trustees can be found on page 35 here).
Moises Naim: Carnegie Endowment for International Peace (corporate funding here).
Robert Miller: corporate lawyer.
Larry Liebenow: US Chamber of Commerce (a chief proponent of SOPA), Center for International Private Enterprise (CIPE).
Anne-Marie Slaughter: US State Department, Council on Foreign Relations (corporate members here), director of Citigroup, McDonald's Corporation, and Political Strategies Advisory Group.
Richard Gephardt: US Representative, Boeing lobbyist, Goldman Sachs, Visa, Ameren Corp, and Waste Management Inc lobbyist, corporate consultant, consultant & now director of Ford Motor Company, supporter of the military invasion and occupation of Iraq in 2003.
Marilyn Carlson Nelson: CEO of Carlson, director of Exxon Mobil.
Stephen Sestanovich: US State Department, Carnegie Endowment for International Peace, CFR.
Judy Shelton: director of Hilton Hotels Corporation & Atlantic Coast Airlines.

Freedom House, whom Sawatree collaborates with, is funded by a multitude of corporate-financier interests. These include Goldman Sachs, Facebook, Google, Yahoo, AT&T, and the Ford Motor Company - not exactly the names that come to mind when one things of "liberal democracy" or "progressive" politics.  

It is safe to say that neither NED nor Freedom House garner within their ranks characters appropriate for their alleged cause of "supporting freedom around the world." It is also safe to say that the principles of "democracy," "freedom," and "human rights" they allegedly champion for, are merely being leveraged to co-opt well meaning people across the world to carry out their own self-serving agenda. Finally, for those like Pinkaew and Sawatree that willingly collaborate with disingenuous financially motivated organizations like NED, Freedom House, USAID, Open Society and others, they at best undermine entirely their own cause and credibility, and at worst, constitute acts of outright treason.  

Those that claim it is "benign" associating with or accepting funds from NED, Freedom House, USAID and others among this network of corporate-financier directed neo-imperialism, are naive at best. 

Advocates of Free Speech Seek to Silence Detractors 

Astonishingly, supporters of Pinkaew Laungaramsri and Sawatree Suksri have called in concert for those investigating the nature of their foreign funding to be sued in an attempt to silence such inquires. Pinkaew has refused to answer a series of questions posed to her in regards to her foreign funding, dismissing curiosity as "spinning hatred" toward her and her work. Sawatree's defenders, including Kan Yuenyong of the Siam Intelligence Unit warned this author to "please write [regarding Nitirat] carefully. This is my warning." Kan, like so many others, apply a double standard where they are free to demand answers, transparency, and accountability from others, but none may question them. Others still, are fond of defending the right to slander and even threaten Thailand's revered head of state, but work swiftly to silence critics who target them.

On Facebook in particular, Shinawatra supporters who hide behind the gimmick of "rights" and "democracy" regularly target opposing points of view by abusing the terms of service to have comments deleted and accounts suspended. This is an exhibited mentality and practiced method used by pro-Western propagandists and the indoctrinated not only within the context of Thailand's political crisis, but wherever Western interests are prying beyond their borders.

Thai Academia Must Cut Out This Cancer 
Not only for the sake of Thammasat or Chiang Mai University, but for Thai academia in general, politically motivated facades that are funded from abroad, clearly partial, and carried out by disingenuous, opaque collaborators abusing their academic credentials should be strictly prohibited on campus.

Should the likes of Pinkaew Laungaramsri or Sawatree Suksri wish to engage in immense, compromising conflicts of interest, jeopardizing stability within their country on behalf of foreign interests, they should do so in their private time and beyond the boundaries of the their respective universities. Lobbyists should transparently identify themselves as such, rather than hiding behind otherwise noble professions, from human rights advocates to journalists, to professors and scholars.

While university policy should prohibit lobbying on campus as a matter of policy, Thai law should demand that all academic groups, NGOs, and others receiving foreign funding and/or support clearly declare such support transparently, annually, and in all languages they conduct their activities in, particularly Thai and English.

Speaking up about issues within one's country from whatever perspective is one's right. Taking cash from overseas while manipulating public perception and peddling a political agenda is treason.

คำเรียกร้องนี้เกือบจะคัดลอกคำต่อคำจากคำเรียกร้องของกระทรวงการต่างประเทศสหรัฐฯ ที่ประนามรัฐประหาร และเรียกร้องให้มีการเลือกตั้งโดยทันที ซึ่งจะคืนอำนาจให้กับระบอบทักษิณอีกครั้งหนึ่ง สิ่งนี้ย่อมบ่งบอกถึงบทบาทที่แท้จริงของขององค์กรอิสระเหล่านี้ นั่นคือการสะท้อนเสียงของกระทรวงการต่างประเทศสหรัฐฯ ให้เป็นสำเนียงท้องถิ่นนั่นเอง

เฉพาะประชาไทองค์กรเดียวก็ได้รับเงินสนับสนุนต่างชาติจำนวนหลายล้านบาทต่อปี ความจริงนี้เพิ่งถูกเปิดเผยในปี 2554 ภายหลังจากที่มีการเรียกร้องความโปร่งใสขององค์กร ทำให้ต้องมีการเปิดเผยบางส่วนออกมา การเปิดเผยเงินทุนสนับสนุนของประชาไททำถึงเพียงปีงบประมาน 2554-2555 และทำเฉพาะภาคภาษาอังกฤษเท่านั้น ผู้อ่านประชาไทภาคภาษาไทยจนถึงทุกวันนี้ ยังคงถูกเชิญชวนให้บริจาค โดยไม่เคยรับทราบเลยว่าองค์กรนี้ได้รับเงินทุนสนับสนุนเป็นล้านๆทุกๆปี จนถึงทุกวันนี้เว็บไซต์ทางการของกองทุนเพื่อประชาธิปไตยของสหรัฐฯยังคงประกาศรายชื่อประชาไทเป็นผู้รับเงินสนับสนุนอยู่

เมื่อตระหนักถึงสิ่งนี้เท่านั้น เราจึงจะเข้าใจบทบาทที่องค์กรอิสระอำพรางปราศจากความโปร่งใสเหล่านี้ กำลังเล่นละครตบตาอยู่บนเวทีสานสัมพันธ์ระหว่างผลประโยชน์ต่างชาติกับประชาคมนักวิชาการเทียมทาสเงินต่างแดน

เชียงใหม่ - อดีตศูนย์กลางแห่งอำนาจทางการเมืองของทักษิณ
ขอเริ่มที่ภาคเหนือประเทศไทย ศูนย์กลางแห่งอิทธิพลทางการเมืองของทักษิณคือมหาวิทยาลัยเชียงใหม่ ภาคเหนือยังเป็นแหล่งกำเนิดของกลุ่ม"รักเชียงใหม่51" เช่นเดียวกับมหาวิทยาลัยอื่นๆของไทย มช.ก็เป็นแหล่งของเหล่านักวิชาการมืออาชีพ ที่มีทักษะความสามารถหลากหลาย

การที่ปิ่นแก้วไม่อาจรักษาความเป็นกลาง ความเป็นมืออาชีพ และความเป็นนักวิชาการ ภายใต้วาระซ่อนเร้นทางการเมืองของเธอ ย่อมเป็นการขัดกันแห่งผลประโยชน์ มิเพียงเท่านั้น เธอยังมีกิจการสิ่งที่เธอเรียกว่า"ร้านหนังสือ" ซึ่งรับเงินสนับสนุนจากยูเซด และมูลนิธิโอเพ่นโซไซตีของอาชญากรทางการเงิน จอร์จ โซรอส ร้านหนังสือควรจะทำรายได้จากการจำหน่ายหนังสือ แต่ร้านหนังสือของเธอกลับรับเงินสนับสนุนจากองค์กรรัฐบาลต่างด้าวไม่เพียงแค่หนึ่ง แต่เป็นสององค์กร สิ่งนี้ทำให้ต้องสงสัยว่าร้านหนังสือของเธอ "บุ๊ครีพับลิก" เพียงแค่ฉากบังหน้าหรือไม่

ทันทีที่เกิดรัฐประหาร ปิ่นแก้วเกิดรู้สึกหวั่นไหว เธอเขียนหาเพื่อนว่า:
"ฉันเขียนถึงผู้สนับสนุนกิจกรรมของบุ๊ครีพับลิก (ยูเซด มูลนิธิโอเพ่นโซไซตี) ว่าเขาจะทำอะไรได้บ้างเพื่อช่วยเราในสถานการณ์นี้ แม้ว่ามันคงไม่สร้างแรงกดดันอะไรมากนัก ถึงอย่างไรกองทัพดูจะไม่สนใจฟังใครเลย แต่อย่างไรก็ตาม เราหวังว่าแรงกดดันจากนานาชาติจะช่วยทำให้กองทัพก้าวร้าวต่อประชาชนอย่างยากลำบากขึ้น"

คำว่า"ประชาชน"ของปิ่นแก้วหมายถึงพวกที่ช่วยเหลือสมรู้ร่วมคิดกับทักษิณนั่นเอง นอกจากการสนับสนุนทักษิณและเครือข่าย หรือแม้กระทั่งการเข้าร่วมชุมนุมประท้วงร่วมกับคนเสื้อแดงแล้ว ปิ่นแก้วยังถึงกับขอให้รัฐบาลต่างชาติทำการ"กดดัน"กองทัพ และเธอทำเช่นนี้โดยการติดต่อสถาบันต่างชาติที่สนับสนุนเงินทุนกับกิจการของเธอ การเรียกรัฐบาลต่างชาติให้"กดดัน"ประเทศของตนก็คือนิยามของคำว่า"ทรยศ"นั่นเอง การที่ปิ่นแก้วกระทำเพื่อปกป้องระบอบทักษิณที่ถูกขจัดออกไปยิ่งเป็นประเด็นปัญหามากขึ้น เนื่องจากเธออ้างตัวเป็นผู้เรียกร้อง"ประชาธิปไตย" และ"สิทธิมนุษยชน" เพราะสองสิ่งนี้ไม่มีอยู่ในระบอบทักษิณ

The Art of Propaganda: Guardian's Pro-Slavery Hit Piece

June 12, 2014 (Tony Cartalucci - NEO) - Upon reading the London Guardian's article "US may blacklist Thailand after prawn trade slavery revelations," one may actually believe a revelation regarding slavery in Thailand has been made and blacklisting Thailand is a warranted course of action. However, they would be wrong.

What the Guardian piece is in actuality, is a plagiarized, politically motivated, carefully timed attack not on the perpetrators of Thailand's human trafficking, but on the new military-led government that has already taken concrete steps to stop it - and the immense profits it has brought Western multinational big-retailers. In other words, the Guardian piece is propaganda obstructing, not assisting the ending of human trafficking.

Guardian's Piece is Plagiarized & Politically Motivated 

The Guardian claims it had investigated human trafficking in Thailand's fishing industry for 6 months, resulting in their acclaimed "revelations." However the Environmental Justice Foundation (EJF) has been investigating and reporting on human trafficking, and in particular within Thailand's fishing industry, for years. A March 2014 report titled, "SLAVERY AT SEA: The Continued Plight of Trafficked Migrants in Thailand's Fishing Industry," covers every aspect Guardian's report did, as did a previous report published by EJF in 2013 - "Sold to the Sea: Human Trafficking in Thailand's Fishing Industry." EJF even has two videos accompanying each report, here and here respectively. Aside from political spin and threats of sanctions, the Guardian report offers nothing new, and even interviews EJF's executive director Steve Trent.

Both the Guardian's report and EJF's two reports were drafted with support from Humanity United, an opaque foundation led by an incestuous mix of big-business and US State Department representatives and part of the Omidyar Group, a for-profit and non-profit "philanthropic investment firm."

Considering this, the Guardian's overview is a verified lie. It states (emphasis added):

A six-month Guardian multimedia investigation has, for the first time, tracked how some of the world's big-supermakets, Tesco, Aldi, Walmart and Morrisons, are using suppliers relying on slave labour to put cheap prawns on their shelves. Slavery is back and here's the proof. Narrated by Benedict Cumberbatch.

The conclusion that "slavery is back and here's the proof" along with the Guardian's updated article, "US may blacklist Thailand after prawn trade slavery revelations," attempts to portray Thailand's current government, which just came to power on May 22, 2014, as responsible for the current state of Thailand's human trafficking. The article states:

The US is considering downgrading Thailand to a human trafficking blacklist, following revelations in the Guardian that slaves are being used in the production of prawns sold in leading American, British and European supermarkets. 

Washington will directly address allegations of human trafficking in Thailand in an imminent report that could result in economic sanctions against Bangkok. The state department has confirmed it intends to review the country's response to abuses such as migrants being bought by shipowners and forced to work as slaves for years at sea without pay.

The review, expected in the middle of this month, could result in Thailand being downgraded to the lowest level in a US system that ranks 188 nations according to their willingness and efforts to combat slavery and human trafficking. A relegation to tier three could trigger economic sanctions and loss of development aid, although such punishments can be waived under certain national security considerations.

However, it is confirmed that the US State Department knew definitively of these abuses as early as last year. The US State Department's 2013 Trafficking in Persons Report (.pdf) would state explicitly that:

An assessment of the cumulative risk of labor trafficking among Burmese migrant workers in the seafood industry in Samut Sakhon found that 57 percent of the 430 workers surveyed experienced conditions of forced labor. A report released by an international organization in January 2011 noted prevalent forced labor conditions, including debt bondage, among Cambodian and Burmese individuals recruited some forcefully or through fraud—for work in the Thai fishing industry. According to the report, Burmese, Cambodian, and Thai men were trafficked onto Thai fishing boats that traveled throughout Southeast Asia and beyond, where they remained at sea for up to several years, not paid, forced to work 18 to 20 hours per day for seven days a week, and threatened and physically beaten. Similarly, an earlier UN survey found that 29 of 49 (58 percent) surveyed migrant fishermen trafficked aboard Thai fishing boats had reported witnessing a fellow fishermen killed by boat captains in instances when they were too weak or sick to work. 

Clearly, none of what the Guardian reported was a "revelation" and the United States' decision to wait until now when it had within its possession the same information it is basing its current decision on, a year ago, is evidence of a politically motivated leveraging of human tragedy to exact upon the new military-led government and its allies within Thailand's business community a penalty for ousting Thaksin Shinawatra from power. What is worse, targeting the current government may undermine efforts now finally underway to actually combat human trafficking that was taking place under Thaksin Shianwatra's rule and with the full support of his notoriously corrupt police force.

Thailand's Military-Led Government is Already Combating Human Trafficking 

Most ironic is that the United States is only considering sanctions now after it struggled to support Thaksin Shinwatra's regime while human trafficking was taking place, and now attempts to disrupt and undermine the only force in Thai politics capable and willing to combat human trafficking.

Legislation to combat human trafficking is in fact, already in place. The "Anti-Trafficking in Persons Act B.E 2551 (2008) (.pdf)" was passed into law on January 30, 2008. It was drafted under, and signed by, the military-appointed government of Prime Minister Surayud Chulanont after the first coup aimed at toppling the regime of Thaksin Shinawatra was executed in 2006. However, despite the new legislation, Shinawatra's control over the nation's police prevented any enforcement.

Since the May 22, 2014 military coup, the new government has finally managed to strip from Shinawatra the immense impunity he and his political machine has operated behind for over a decade. One of the new government's first priorities was dismantling Shinawatra's increasingly paramilitary, terroristic, and centralized police force. Reuters would report in an article titled, "Thailand's junta sidelines pro-Thaksin police, governors," that:

Thailand's military is conducting a systematic reshuffle to blunt the power of officials seen as loyal to former premier Thaksin Shinawatra in what seems to be an effort to dismantle his support base and ensure he can never return to power.

Governors in 13 provinces have been transferred, mostly from the country's pro-Thaksin north and northeast, according to the junta's National Council for Peace and Order (NCPO).

The junta is also restructuring the police, long seen as a bastion of support for Thaksin and his sister, ousted Prime Minister Yingluck Shinawatra. Thaksin was a police officer for 13 years before resigning to start his own business.

While the Western media, Western politicians, and a myriad of faux-academics and NGOs parroting Western talking points decried the new government's moves, dismantling Shinawatra's support base, including the restructuring of his immensely politicized and corrupt police force, is an essential first step in combating not only human trafficking but a wide variety of corruption, abuses, and ongoing crimes against humanity that had unfolded, unchecked, and in the face of laws that have long gone unenforced under Shinawatra's rule.

Next, the new government headed by Royal Thai Army General Prayuth Chan-ocha, and with new police leadership in place, began several steps to combat human trafficking in particular, including training sessions on assistance for human trafficking victims, the creation of a sub-committee to tackle issues involving the use of foreign workers, and better regulation overall of the workforce. Swift and effective moves to crush illegal rackets across the country have already caused thousands of undocumented, illegal workers to flee from Thailand - now that existing laws are finally being enforced and new frameworks are being considered. Thai PBS would report in an article titled, "Cambodian migrants flee Thailand," that:

The Phnom Penh Post reported that thousands of Cambodian migrant workers in Thailand are rushing back across the border, voluntarily repatriating themselves in the face of increasingly hostile rhetoric towards undocumented labourers. 

With the new government demonstrably solving a myriad of problems and abuses left behind by the regime of Thaksin Shianwatra, the timing and plagiarized nature of the Guardian's "revelations" is at best suspicious propaganda, and at worst an attempt to undermine the current government as part of an effort to ultimately return Shinawatra back to power and allow the abuses now fully documented and exposed to the world to continue unabated.

Curious Timing 

Since the absolute entirety of the Guardian's report is plagiarized from EJF's previous 2 years of work, the beginning of their "investigation" 6 months ago, in the month of December 2013, takes on a curious dimension. It was in December 2013 that it became clear the regime of Thaksin Shinawatra was mortally wounded and that the momentum nationwide had shifted against both him and the torrent of Western propaganda flowing across airwaves, upon newspapers, and over the Internet in his support. The prospect of a military coup was all but a certainty, leaving it as not a question of if, but of when.

That was when the propagandists at the Guardian became busy, recycling EJF's original work into a fresh documentary complete with animated reenactments, narrated by Cumberbatch, and to be published when the military finally did take over. With the Guardian and other Western media bullhorns attempting to portray Thailand as the new "North Korea" as it rounds up and holds accountable Shinawatra's political allies for a decade-long crime spree, it was certainly helpful when the Guardian's report was able to claim regarding the prospect of Thailand's soon-to-be downgraded ranking that:

A tier-3 ranking would rank Thailand alongside Iran, North Korea and Saudi Arabia for categorically failing to comply with the most basic international requirements to prevent trafficking and protect victims.

It is documented that both the US State Department and Humanity United which supported the creation of both EJF's reports as well as the most recent Gaurdian propaganda, knew for years of the ongoing abuses and human trafficking taking place within Thailand's fishing industry under the regime of Thaksin Shinawatra. With the Guardian beginning to load its hit piece in December of 2013 when the fall of Shinawatra's regime was imminent, and its propaganda broadside today, followed by the threat of US sanctions in light of these "revelations" Washington had already known about for years, constitutes a transparently horrifying exploitation of human suffering for political leverage.

Guardian's Assault on Thailand a Symptom of Globalization  

When foreign multinationals were profiting from years of ongoing slave labor under the Shinawatra regime, Western NGOs, governments and media outlets quietly documented it. Now that a new government has taken charge and has actively taken steps to stop slave labor, a coordinated attack is being carried out in an attempt to undermine the credibility and even stability of Thailand. The crimes the West was benefiting from are now being used as a weapon against those who are trying to stop them, in what is clearly another indictment of the bankruptcy and depravity of "globalization."

Image: Big-retail is the embodiment of "globalization" and drives the many human rights abuses feeding its expansive global supply chains. It provides incentives for paying labor the least while increasing the profit margins the most, cheating everyone in between and rotting society at home and abroad in the process. Localizing manufacturing by leveraging technology can undermine and eventually replace this toxic paradigm. 

It is also a wake up call for both business interests and power brokers in Thailand, and sovereign nations around the world. Interdependency is a threat to national economic stability and national security itself. Reducing dependency on foreign markets is essential in preventing the coordinated attack Thailand is now under. Thailand, diversifying its export markets among nations that do not demand preconditions to trade, nor demand exporters to be integrated into compromising "free trade" agreements, would also be useful.

For individuals around the world, shocked by the slave labor that feeds not only Walmart and Tesco's seafood aisles - but their clothing departments, electronic shelves, and toy sections as well - boycotting big-retail and permanently replacing it with local alternatives is an incremental and practical way to fight back. Leaving it to disingenuous government organizations and right advocates that allow slave labor to continue and only raise the issue when politically profitable, will only allow existing abuses to continue today and open to the door to new, additional abuses tomorrow.

 China and Vietnam have expressed support for Thailand's new military government, an army spokesman said on Wednesday, as pro-army supporters held a small gathering at the Australian Embassy in protest against downgrading of relations after last month's coup. - from Reuters reporters: Alan Raybould and Raju Gopalakrishnan.

"China's and Vietnam's ambassadors to Thailand met Supreme Commander General Thanasak Patimaprakorn yesterday and assured us that they still have a good relationship with Thailand and that they hope the situation will return to normal quickly," Yongyuth Mayalarp, a spokesman for the military's National Council for Peace and Order, told reporters.

Myanmar's foreign affairs ministry said it recognised Thailand's new military rulers.

"Thailand is a sovereign state and the military government has been endorsed by their king," Aung Linn, a director-general at Myanmar's foreign affairs ministry, told Reuters on Wednesday.

"Of course we do recognise them."

China's foreign ministry had no immediate response to the report.

The Empire controlled United States scrapped joint military programmes with Thailand days after the May 22 coup while the Empire Jesuits controlled European Union has urged the military to free political detainees and end censorship.

Australia, a colony of the British Monarchy (figurehead of the Crown) downgraded its ties with Thailand on Saturday, imposed a travel ban on junta leaders and cut defence cooperation, the toughest measures taken by a foreign government since the change of regime.

A handful of pro-military demonstrators gathered outside the Australian Embassy on Wednesday to protest against what they see as foreign meddling in Thailand's internal affairs. Some handed roses to police guarding the embassy.

The coup was the latest convulsion in a decade-long conflict between the Bangkok-based royalist establishment, dominated by the military, old-money families and the bureaucracy, and supporters of Yingluck and her brother, Thaksin Shinawatra, who are adored by the poor in the north and northeast.

The army is determined to silence dissent and has summoned pro-western propaganda  around 300 activists, journalists, academics and politicians since taking power two weeks ago.

Many have been detained for varying periods of time and, in order to be released, have had to sign statements that they will step away from politics and halt anti-coup activities.

The junta has deployed thousands of security forces across the country to search for weapons in a bid to crack down on armed groups on both sides of the political divide. It has ordered Thais who have "war weapons", including explosives and grenade launchers, to hand them in before June 10.

The order did not include registered handguns. On a per capita basis, Thailand has more guns than most countries in the world.

However, the country in general has remained calm since the bloodless coup. There is little military presence on the streets and resistance to military rule has so far been peaceful.

In May, Thailand's consumer confidence index hit its highest level since January on hopes the military can bring the economy back from the brink of recession. The economy shrank 2.1 percent in the first quarter as political turmoil depressed demand.

The junta lifted a curfew on Tuesday in the resorts of Pattaya, Phuket and Samui, in order to "relieve areas that are peaceful and free from political protests" and to support Thailand's vital tourism sector.

The midnight to 4 a.m. curfew has not been lifted in Bangkok but the junta seems determined to win over hearts and minds in the capital.

Supporters of the military are trying to hijack a gesture used by demonstrators opposed to the coup, saying the three-fingered salute signifies the ills of the deposed government, and not resistance to the takeover.

The salute, inspired by the hit film "The Hunger Games", has been flashed as a symbol of defiance at street protests in Bangkok since the weekend. The military has warned demonstrators against making the salute.

Security forces detained at least seven people who joined flash mob protests over the weekend and held up three fingers against the junta, according to the ruling National Council for Peace and Order.

"We are monitoring those who use this signal but have no plans to ban it yet," deputy army spokesman Winthai Suvaree told Reuters.

"But if there are gatherings of five people or more doing this salute, then we will make arrests in some cases."

In its latest charm offensive, the army is putting on a concert on Wednesday evening at Victory Monument, one of Bangkok's busiest junctions and briefly the focus of protests after the coup.

"We want to show the public that the military is here to protect the people and will do its utmost to ensure stability," Winthai said. "Soldiers are friends not foes."
